America West Downer Plane On Wednesday
August 28, 2002, America West's flight 794 from Houston made a less
than routine landing at Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport
when the nose gear collapsed on the Airbus A320. A passenger
reported that he figured they were in for a rough landing when the
airplane landed at a rapid speed. The NTSB report indicates
that trouble began when the captain tried to maintain directional
control after activating the thrust reversers. One of the
reversers had been deactivated by maintenance. The plane
swerved to the right leaving the paved runway and entering the dirt
infield south of the runway where the collapse and partial
separation of its nose gear strut assembly occurred. Five of
the 154 passengers and crew of five onboard suffered minor injuries.
